Japanese grammar

The grammar sits in the sentence you say. It is not a separate game.

Twenty-four classes. You hear the sentence, then you say it. A tap does not pass.

Ninety days are free on Japanese. The other languages do not come with those days. The clock starts when you pass the first sentence.

Then forty dollars keeps Japanese, or sixty dollars opens every language. Paid once. No monthly plan.

  1. 1

    Your name

    こんにちは。わたしは____です。____からきました。はじめまして。

は marks the topic, not the subject you translate as am. です closes the polite sentence. から is from. きました is the polite past of come, the ordinary way to give your origin. There is no separate word for am.

  2. 2

    The family

    これはわたしのかぞくです。あにがいます。ははは、いしゃです。

の links わたし and かぞく. がいます is the person you have. はは is mother. The next は is the topic particle, so you hear ははは. Then いしゃです. The pause is the grammar. Do not write a second はは.

  3. 3

    The day

    しちじにおきます。はたらきます。ろくじにたべます。

に marks the hour. おきます and はたらきます and たべます are the polite non-past. They are not a story about yesterday. Yesterday needs ました.

  4. 4

    A real need

    たすけてください。もうすこしゆっくりおねがいします。

てください hangs on the て-form: たすけて. ゆっくり is the speed. わかりません is the honest middle, the polite negative. Do not apologize for needing the slower line.

  5. 5

    Yesterday

    昨日、仕事をしました。六時に帰りました。家で晩ご飯を食べました。

ました is the polite past. を marks what you did. に is the time. で is the place of the action, not the destination. に would be the place you go to. 帰りました takes に if you name the destination. Here 六時に is the time.

  6. 6

    Tomorrow

    明日、働くつもりです。母に電話するつもりです。

Dictionary form plus つもりです. 働く and 電話する stay plain because です already closed the sentence. に marks the person you call. 母に, not 母を.

  7. 7

    Getting there

    駅へはどう行きますか。歩いて行きます。バスで行きます。

へ is the direction. で is the means: バスで. 歩いて is the て-form, the manner, then 行きます. か is the question. There is no extra word for to sitting alone.

  8. 8

    The phone

    もしもし、____です。____さんはいらっしゃいますか。あとでお電話ください。

もしもし is the phone hello, not こんにちは. さんは the respectful name marker. いらっしゃいます is the honorific for a person being there. お電話ください is the polite request you already know, with the humble お.

  9. 9

    What happened

    昨日は雨が降っていました。遅く出て、バスに乗り遅れました。

降っていました is the polite past progressive: the rain was going on. 出て links the late exit. 乗り遅れました is finished. Do not put every verb in ました and call it a story. に marks what you failed to catch.

  10. 10

    What you think

    いい考えだと思います。簡単だとは思いません。

Plain form plus と思います. です cannot sit before と. 考え is a noun, so だ. 簡単 is a な-adjective, so だ again. The doubt is とは思いません. The inner clause stays plain. There is no subjunctive ending to switch.

  11. 11

    When it breaks

    インターネットが動きません。だれかを送れますか。会議をずらせますか。

ません is the polite negative. が marks the thing that fails. を marks the meeting. 送れます and ずらせます are potential: can send, can shift. Potential is not the same word as ます.

  12. 12

    The work

    アナリストとして働いています。報告書は終わりました。

として is as, the role. 働いています is the ongoing job, not one day. は puts the finished thing as the topic. ました says it is done. 昨日終わりました is one past moment. Use the one you mean.

  13. 13

    A disagreement

    お話はわかります。でも賛成できません。別の日を提案します。

でも is the turn. 賛成できません is cannot agree: the potential negative, not a rude いいえ. を marks the day you propose. しかし is heavier and still polite.

  14. 14

    Far away

    もっと近くに住んでいたら、もっと会えるでしょう。

たら on the past form is the hypothetical. 住んでいたら is if we were living. でしょう is the soft conclusion, not a promise. Do not use たら for a meeting you have already set.

  15. 15

    The news

    新聞によると、決定は難しいそうです。まだ判断できません。

によると names the source. そうです here is hearsay: plain 難しい plus そうです. 難しそうです would mean it looks difficult. That is a different そう. Do not mix them. まだ is still.

  16. 16

    The email

    契約書をお送りします。金曜日までにご返事をお願いします。

お送りします is humble. までに is the deadline, not まで which is until a stretch of time. ご返事 is the honorific noun. お願いします is the request you already have.

  17. 17

    What you mean

    つまり、日を変えたいということですね。違いますか。

つまり is so. ということ packages the clause. ね asks them to confirm. 違いますか invites the correction. そういう意味ではありません undoes a bad sentence. です/ます stays until they drop it.

  18. 18

    A hard conversation

    言いづらいです。攻撃ではありません。家の手伝いが必要です。

づらい on the stem means hard to. ではありません is the polite is not. が必要です is the need. 明日また話せます is a pause if you name the time. It is not an exit.

  19. 19

    The real issue

    お金の話ではありません。信頼の話です。

の links the noun to 話. There is no case ending to learn here. The contrast is ではありません against です. One cause is usually too clean. 事実は遅れです。意見は別です keeps them apart.

  20. 20

    The deal

    値段が変わらなければ、その日を受け入れます。繰り返します。そちらが届けて、こちらが設置します。

ば is the real condition you can still meet. 変わらなければ is if it does not change. Class 14 was たら, a world that is not this one. Do not mix them. 繰り返します frames two plain て-linked clauses under the polite close you already used.

  21. 21

    The joke

    友だちにはおもしろいです。仕事では、そのまま言います。

には is the friends' side. では is the work setting. Irony is not marked. The plain だ form is for friends. です/ます stays at work until they drop it. The safe line is the literal one.

  22. 22

    The table

    この会に。どうぞお元気で。ご愁傷さまです。必要なら、ここにいます。

The toast can be a fragment with に. ご愁傷さまです is the set condolence. Do not follow it with advice. 必要なら is if needed, the なら you can already hear as a condition. Then stop.

  23. 23

    Any topic

    つまり、____の話ですね。もっと簡単に言えますか。考えは説明できます。用語はまだです。

簡単に is the adverb. 言えます and 説明できます are potential. は contrasts the idea you can carry and the term you cannot. まだです is the honest limit. Let them correct you.

  24. 24

    The room

    立場は、月曜に始めます。理由は、文面ができたからです。譲歩は、見直しを受け入れます。次は、今日ご確認ください。

からです is the reason, on a plain clause: できた. を marks the review you accept. ご確認ください is the request. Use only patterns from the classes before this one. If you need a new ending, go back.
